Short report: Underwater Archaeology Workshop in The German Archaeological Institute (DAI)

Berlin – Eurasia Department of German Archaeological Institute (DAI) held an Underwater of Archaeology Workshop for Maritime archaeology group of Iranian Center for Archaeological Research (ICAR) from 1 to 2 March in Berlin.

Following to previous correspondence between Prof. Dr. Svend Hansen (director of Eurasia Department, German Archaeological Institute) and Dr. Hossein Tofighian (Director of Maritime archaeology group of Iranian Center for Archaeological Research) In 2016, they were decided to hold an underwater archaeology workshop to support Maritime Aarchaeology Group in Tehran, Iran. This workshop is organized by Prof. Dr. Svend Hansen and Dr. Judith Thomalsky (Director of German Archaeological Institute, Eurasia Department – Tehran Branch). Workshop lecturers were Dr.Hanz Günter Martin (Former Director of DEGUWA), Dr. Beat Eberschweiler (Director of Archäologie & Denkmalpflege, Kanton Zürich, Switzerland) and Maik Teubner (expert on diving techniques and equipment and underwater archaeology, etc.) also from Iran Dr. Hossein Tofighian (Director of Maritime archaeology group of ICAR), Dr. Saman Soortijee (PhD student in Archaeology and research fallow), Mrs. Vida Abyaneh (communication and internet cooperation, communication and international  cooperation office, RICHT), Ramin Adibi (PADI member and Editor-in-chief journal of archaeology of maritime landscpe), Sara Asadi (Master of marine ecology and diving instructor) and Shadi Kalantar (M.A student of Archaeology in university of Tehran and PADI advance openwater).

This workshop was held two days:

First day:

At opening meeting, organizers, lecturers and guests introduced together on Friendly and Welcoming Atmosphere. After that, Dr.Hanz Günter Martin presented about “Theory and Practice underwater archaeology” that contained useful points for Guests. After lunch in Luxury restaurant, Dr. Beat Eberschweiler  presented about ” lake Archaeology and prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps” which was very helpful for Iranian guests. This speech was helpful  about archaeological works in Caspian sea. At the end, Maik Teubner gave speech on necessary tools of underwater archaeology that was extremely Informative and impressive.

Second day:

Free discussion and Presentation on Iran Underwater cultural heritage and its share in maritime archaeological studies by Dr. Hossien Tofighian and presentation about maritime archaeological studies in north coast of Iran (southern coast of Caspian sea) particularity about   recording files of “Ghorogh” shipwreck (Talesh) and “Zaghmarz” shipwreck (Behshahr) by Dr. Saman Soortijee and Ramin Adibi  . We got some useful advice and solutions from workshop lecturers about underwater cultural heritage protection methods to Iranian maritime cultural heritage.

Finally, the lecturers and guests were talking about future program of maritime archaeology training.
